About the book

AI Leadership for Boards – Leading Responsible AI for Value Creation, published by Springer Nature, is authored by Fernanda Torre, Liselotte Engstam, and Robin Teigland, with a guest contribution by Professor Stanislav Shekshnia (INSEAD). The book builds on foundational work first initiated in 2018—when artificial intelligence had only just begun to enter boardroom agendas, and the concept of “responsible AI” was still emerging.

Originally supported by Vinnova – Sweden’s Innovation Agency, the project brought together experts from Chalmers University of Technology, Digoshen, and Next Agents to explore how boards could govern exponential technologies in a way that reinforces innovation and sustainability. This work led to the widely cited 2019 publication AI Leadership and the Future of Corporate Governance and the first edition of this book, which introduced a two-pillar governance framework: guidance and supervision.

In the years since, the pace of technological change has accelerated. Generative AI is reshaping entire industries, sustainability has become a core board priority, and directors are expected to lead on both fronts with clarity and foresight.

This new edition responds to those demands. It adds a third strategic layer focused on AI business strategy, leadership, talent, and transformation, while deepening its exploration of how AI and sustainability intersect.

The book draws on hundreds of board-level interactions through the Boards Impact Forum, real-world training programs, and research collaborations with leading institutions such as INSEAD, MIT CISR, and MIT CSAIL. The result is a timely and practical guide for boards seeking to lead responsibly in an era where algorithmic power and planetary boundaries converge.

AI has the potential to transform governance and drive its value creation. Boards need to both question their own effectiveness and competencies, and engage in revisiting the company’s strategy, capabilities, performance management, leadership, and culture. This book rooted in academic research validated extensively across companies provides a practical approach to both.”

Luisa Delgado, Chair at Swarovski, NED at INGKA/IKEA, DIA Group, Fortum and Telia et al.

Finally, a book that bridges academic insight and boardroom action. It provides forward-thinking with a grounded approach. And, this isn’t just a book—it’s a playbook. From board composition to talent strategy and AI supervision, the guidance is clear, current, and actionable. This is about the future of board leadership.

Transformation starts among us in the Board. We have to understand AI through curiosity, inspiration and how employees and technology work together. That’s why this is a must read for all my Board colleagues.

In this fast-moving technology environment, boards need a practical AI framework to help guide direction. This book delivers that framework.
